Chapter 15
Nick
The palace was surrounded by soldiers paying very little attention to what was going on outside the gates. They seemed frantic, rushing to set up a defence. It gave me hope that Briar was making her escape but if Shadow was there she should already be out. There was no way to tell if heâd really come to help her or not. She could be struggling to get out on her own and even The Vampire didnât stand a chance against all these soldiers. Many of them were alphas, and not just the regular low power ones. Theyâd called in some that were almost as strong as me.
Jace and Alasdair continued on without me, going to find somewhere inconspicuous to park and a safe place for Alasdair to focus on his drawings and all the phone calls he kept making and receiving. If Briar had Shadowâs power she should be able to teleport to the car without anyone seeing her leave. Iâd figure out what to do if he wasnât with her once I found her. To do that I would first need to get inside the palace gates.
This wasnât my first time breaking into a gated building, rich idiots liked to think they could protect themselves from the big bad Wolves with a bit of metal or stone. I was more than happy to teach them otherwise.
I jogged around the fence, maintaining a slight distance so the guards wouldnât get suspicious. There were sections where the fence joined solid stone wall before going back to metal bars with ornate spikes. I could climb certain sections but didnât want to be found roaming the grounds looking for a way into the building. Every door Iâd seen so far was guarded.
I was still close enough to the front of the palace to see when a group of people dressed in black piled out of a car. They charged forward, stopped to throw something then ran back. A series of bangs followed and the smell of smoke filled the air. It looked like Alasdairâs backup had arrived. Hopefully, their distraction would draw the focus of the soldiers while I looked for a way to get inside. I left them to it and resumed my search, tuning out the continuing explosions and gunfire.
My senses heightened as people came running my way. Two scared beta women skidded to a stop when they saw me, their eyes going wide as they trembled in fear. The brown haired one looked around like she was going to find a way around me but they were only betas, if I meant them harm there would be no stopping me. Lucky for them I didnât harm women, especially ones who were barely dressed and obviously running from something.
Their outfits caught my attention, not because of all the skin on display but because they were unusual. Women didnât commonly wear maid dresses like that in public; they resembled something that could be purchased from a sex shop rather than the old fashioned dresses some alphas still had their servants wear.
